Norway is set to embark on an exciting new chapter in its railway history, combining luxury travel experiences with a robust commitment to sustainable transport. This transformation is exemplified by two significant developments: the introduction of the Norient Express luxury train service in 2025 and the ongoing electrification of the country's railway network, including the crucial Nordland Line.

The Norient Express: A Scenic Journey Through Norway

Come autumn 2025, Norway will welcome the Norient Express, a clever play on the famous Orient Express. This luxurious train service promises to offer travellers a breathtaking six-day adventure across Norway's stunning landscapes. Starting in the coastal city of Bergen, the train will journey southeast through Oslo before concluding in the historic city of Trondheim.

Luxury on Rails

The Norient Express is designed to be more than just a means of transport; it's a full luxury experience on wheels. Two electrically powered trains will operate this service, featuring:

  • Luxurious accommodation rivalling high-end hotel suites

  • A gourmet dining compartment serving exquisite Norwegian cuisine

  • An onboard fitness room and spa

  • An observatory car, perfect for Northern Lights viewing

  • A bar and lounge for socialising and enjoying cocktails

Sustainable Travel

In line with Norway's commitment to environmental sustainability, the Norient Express will be fully electric. This aligns perfectly with the country's reputation as a leader in green initiatives and electric transportation.

Electrification: Transforming Norway's Transport Landscape

While the Norient Express represents the luxury end of Norway's rail transformation, the country is also making significant strides in electrifying its entire railway network, benefiting both passenger and freight transport.

Current State of Electrification

Currently, 62% of Norway's railway lines are electrified, accounting for 90% of passenger kilometres and 93% of tonne kilometres. This extensive electrification has already significantly reduced the carbon footprint of both passenger and freight transport in the country.

The Nordland Line: A Priority for Electrification

The Nordland Line, a crucial north-south route, has been prioritised for electrification. This upgrade is estimated to cost 6.5 billion NOK (approximately 570 million pounds) and will have significant impacts on freight transportation:

  1. Increased Efficiency and Capacity: Electric locomotives offer better acceleration and can handle steeper gradients, potentially improving freight transport efficiency and capacity.

  2. Environmental Benefits: Electrification will substantially reduce the 50,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions currently produced annually by non-electrified lines like the Nordland Line.

  3. Cost Savings: In the long run, electrification is expected to reduce operating costs for freight, potentially leading to more competitive pricing for rail freight services.

  4. Network Integration: The Nordland Line's electrification will better integrate it with Norway's broader rail network, allowing for seamless electric freight operations across a larger portion of the country.

Looking Ahead: A Greener Future for Norwegian Railways

The introduction of the Norient Express luxury service and the ongoing electrification of lines like the Nordland Line represent two sides of Norway's railway revolution. On one hand, the country is enhancing its appeal to tourists with sustainable, high-end travel experiences. On the other, it's making significant strides in transforming its freight transport to be more efficient and environmentally friendly. These developments are part of Norway's broader commitment to sustainable rail transport. The Norwegian Railway Directorate is actively studying green solutions to replace diesel trains on non-electrified lines, with options including partial electrification and battery-powered trains. As Norway continues to invest in its railway infrastructure, both passengers and freight stand to benefit. The future of Norwegian railways looks bright, efficient, and decidedly green, setting an example for sustainable transport systems worldwide.
